It's awesome location and colorful ambiance give the perception is a good place to dine but looks can be deceiving. Small portions were way overpriced, and the service was terrible. The manager was very friendly and offered to comp our meal but never did. Really Prairiefire? Keep walking folks....

Yikes, what a difference a few weeks can make. I ordered the hanger steak with potatoes. It should have read on the menu, 85% deep fried chips with grease dripping on them. The flavor of the grease overwhelmed the steak... I managed to stomach .5 the steak and told the manager it was not good. His comment "how was the steak" as to infer if it was so bad, why did you eat all the steak. I can't blame him, how could he see the half I didn't eat was buried in the overwhelming load of chips. My wife ordered 3 tacos, all mushy and not crisp. Not really much else to say. I keep swearing I will give Prairie Fire a chance, and it continues to disappoint. From here on, I sure won't be spending any money at this establishment or any other in the near future. Should have went to On the Border instead.

Been here before for happy hour/drinks and thought it was a great venue. HOWEVER, made dinner reservations there for last Friday night with out-of-town friends....HORRIBLE. Friend of mine loved the CocoBolos Manhattan location, but we were told the menu here was different (apparently NOTHING is the same!). We had reservations for 3 - they sat us at a huge table for 6. They brought us a small "tin" of carmel corn as complementary appetizer - somewhat odd. We ordered a couple other appetizers which were good, but our meal came out 3 minutes after the appetizers. Not sure if their timing is always that bad, or if they were really trying to turn tables quickly. Regardless, the experience was horrible and I was embarrassed I had reccommended it -- I suggest CocoLobos for PATIO DRINKS ONLY!!

This is our 2nd time in. We had a less than average experience the first time based on the service quality. But the food was pretty good. Even knowing there is only one functioning door from Our last experience, we still tried to come in the wrong closed door on the side of the building. Signage and lighting could be improved. Went on a Thursday night about 7pm and the restaurant was empty. We sat at the bar with the only other 3 people in the establishment. The bartender was friendly and attentive. My date ordered whisky. I asked about 2 signature cocktails from the menu. I was told one was a light "patio pounder" and the other was a real drink. I should have gone with the patio pounder... The one I ordered was too strong to even sip, and I love tequila. It took about 10 minutes to get our drink because they were out of the first 2 whisky's my date ordered. We ordered queso and the trio of tacos with a side of hot salsa. The queso was great and the tacos were wonderful. Having been here before, we knew the hot salsa that arrived was not the hot salsa served with the trio of salsas. This was more like a dish of Taco Bell hot sauce. Overall it was average. We would go back for the tacos and skip the drinks.

Dan the GM stopped by to introduce himself and share the new menu. Outstanding service and food.

We went here last night and asked to sit on the patio after being told there was a 40 min wait. It was a very HOT evening but we were not even given the option of the patio when we checked in at first -! The service was so slow our server apologized, "It's my first night on the floor." I can't really blame him for a restaurant that seemed to be struggling with so many things when only marginally busy on a Saturday night. The best part of the meal was the guac + chips and the live outdoor music (provided by Newport Grill). My husband had the Street Tacos and I had the Fish Tacos. Both were lacking flavor and not memorable. The rice is supposed to be cilantro-lime, but tasted like plain white rice. Our kids meals were a beef and cheese burrito which was slightly burned and mac-n-cheese which was a rigatoni with more of pablano cheese sauce? The house margs were very average too. Just REALLY sad and could be so much better.

I went to this restaurant with my partner after wanting to see what prairiefire was all about. We were expecting a good Mexican restaurant that was serving some fancier fare, especially given the price. This is not what we got! I must say, the drinks were good. We got two different kinds of margaritas. They were strong and delicious. That's when the delicious stopped. The chips were stale and the salsa wasn't spicy and only a lateral move from pace picante. The meals were also unimpressive. I got the Mole chicken with black beans. The chicken and bacon tasted old and the mole was undeveloped. My partner got the train wreck and it was ok, but nothing special. We could have found better fate for half the price at any number of other restaurants in the area. For adequate service and decent drinks, this restaurant gets a second star.

My husband and I tried out Coco Bolos on a Wednesday night (6:15). Like many of the other Yelpers, we were underwhelmed. And, judging by the nearly empty restaurant, the reviews are spreading. We ordered the guacamole appetizer to start. It was unimpressive and lacked flavor. I ordered the street tacos and thought they were a little dry and pretty bland. My husband ordered the Baja Fish Tacos and we both agreed they were fine but nothing exceptional. The fish was very spicy and that took away from the flavor. The positives of this place are the atmosphere, location and service. They have a good patio and a friendly staff. In the end, we decided this place makes a better happy hour spot than dining experience.

My experience was only at the bar, so that's what my review will reflect. I stopped by CocoBolos on a day with particularly pleasant weather. This was our choice because of the nice open air bar and because we just wanted a cocktail. Inside, the restaurant had very cute and quirky art on the walls. The bar was very nice and orderly. I ordered the Oaxaca Old Fashioned and my mother ordered the Strange Fruits cocktail. Both were quite tasty and came out quickly. Our bartender was friendly and knowledgeable. She told exactly was what in the drinks and then gave us a fun lesson on mezcals. We both enjoyed our visit and I would definitely return for the bar and possibly to try the food (though it did look a bit pricey when I glanced at the menu).

If you are expecting the food from the Manhattan location, prepare to be very disappointed. I've been here three times and each time bummed about the food. I keep giving it another shot. We were there for Father's Day at 11:30am and there were no brunch items. We were one of 3 tables and they couldn't handle the volume.

I went here last Saturday night in a group of 7. I was really shocked at how easily we found a table when everything around the area was such a zoo! Our waitress was absolutely lovely and made fantastic recommendations for drinks and food. She suggested that we try the house special, which was perfectly cooked salmon with a teriyaki glaze, and set over sauteed peas, carrots, and cherry tomatoes ($24 was a little steep, but there was enough to share between two of us, which made it totally reasonable). The queso tasted great while we waited for the rest of our party to arrive, but it did start to seem a little like velveeta once it began to cool down. I don't recall the price of the appetizer, but it may be worth trying another option if you're looking for something a bit more unique. Two of the others tried the house sangria for drinks (~$9), and they couldn't stop raving about how delicious it was (or stop ordering them either)! For their margarita, you select the type of tequila you'd like, and the waitress guided me towards the best selection for the price and kind of flavor I had in mind. The beverage was made with fresh ingredients, had just the right amount of punch to it, and was overall very delicious. In general, I really liked this place and would come again. If I could make any changes, however, I might suggest that they add a couple more options to the menu for vegetarians, or some food options that are under the $10 price range.

Jumping on the dog pile of bad reviews...bland food, lemonade is country time, salsa is chunky pace, husband's hamburger was raw with greasy fries. My burrito bowl had velveeta cheese dip on top. When we complained the waitress begged us to come back in a couple weeks because the owners went to Manhattan to get their recipes! Shouldn't they have done that before opening!! We were offered desert as a consolation. No thanks wanted food not sweets. No financial incentive to return, so we won't!

If you go here expecting anything that resembles Mexican/Latin American food, go elsewhere. The food is bland, lacks flavor and is frankly insanely overpriced for what you get. 8 of us went there tonight for dinner and I think all of us were underwhelmed. Go here for cocktails, go to see and be seen, go here if you're starving and have money to blow, but if you want real food, go elsewhere. I give it 6 months.

This was our first time at CocoBolos and we went mid afternoon before a movie. We sat at the outside patio portion of the bar. There was no one on the inside part of the restaurant and only a couple of filled tables in the outside patio. There were more customers at the bar, by far. Our bartender, Will, was very friendly and helpful. Unfortunately, that's where the good part kind of ends. My husband ordered the nachos and bacon-wrapped shrimp. The nachos arrived and were very tasty. The bacon-wrapped shrimp did not arrive. Meanwhile, I ordered the triple taco plate with a choice of rice sides. I asked for the jalapeño slaw to be put on the side because I was concerned about the heat intensity. I received my tacos but the slaw was not on the side and instead was all over the tacos. I asked to have the tacos remade with the slaw on the side. Also, I should mention, there was no rice or side served with my plate of tacos. My husband's bacon-wrapped shrimp still had not arrived so we had to ask about it. We were told there was a "mix-up in the kitchen" and added they would send some out to us right away. When I finally received my triple taco dish again, this time the slaw was on the side, as requested, but still no rice or side. The shrimp taco had 2 very tiny shrimp in it and the fish taco had what looked like a fish stick in it. The veggie taco was ok. During all this time the bar had really started to fill up and Will was quite busy and was without any assistance from any other staff members. I could see 5-6 staff members (including the manager, Sharon) hanging out in the kitchen and Sharon kept putting various types of food in her mouth while she was in the kitchen but was easily viewed from where I sat. I wondered why someone couldn't come out and give Will a hand with all the customers he was trying to serve at the bar and even mentioned that to him. We finally received the bacon-wrapped shrimp and the bacon was completely raw. The bartender called the manager, Sharon, over and we told her about the many errors in our meal. We let her know that the one thing we liked was the nachos. She asked me if I liked my sangria and I told her that I did (although it was very average) and her comment was "well, at least you liked the nachos, beer and sangria". I thought that an odd thing to say. She did say she would have the kitchen do another plate of the bacon-wrapped shrimp and although my husband told her, no thank you, that he no longer wanted them, she insisted, saying she wanted us to see what they were supposed to look like. When we finally asked for our check from the bartender, Will, he again talked to the manager because, I believe, he needed her to make any adjustments to our check based on our poor experience. She (Sharon) came back over, explained that the 3rd attempt at our bacon-wrapped shrimp didn't arrive because "there was another mix-up in the kitchen". She explained that she didn't charge us for the shrimp (duh) and also adjusted the cost of my taco meal. Other than than the nachos, this meal was a complete disaster! The manager did not appear to be doing much managing. As a side note, the background music was playing the same song over and over in a continuous loop. The couple next to us complained about it and it was quite annoying. When I mentioned it to the manager she said "oh, I don't notice that since I just tune it out". All in all it was a very disappointing experience and we were hoping to find another good place to eat in that area. We will not go back!

My wife and spent a Friday evening at PrairieFire and the CocoBolos patio cried out to us as great place to spend a sunny evening. It took a little while to get service at the bar, but it was moderately busy so I certainly didn't hold this against them. We ordered drinks - including a Caipirinha, which is a Brazilian concoction of sugar cane hard liquor and wine, and the bartender was very accommodating. The food left a lot to be desired. We sampled the meatballs - which were not well seasoned and just had an ordinary ground beef taste. The issue is that they were doused in marinara sauce, and the combination of regular ground beef in an Italian sauce didn't sit right with me....I felt there should have been a basil or Italian seasoning kick to it. Also, the meatballs were not evenly heated up - an dead giveaway of being microwaved. We also ordered the crab meat quesadillas and were less than impressed. The crab meat was bland and the quesos were so overloaded with black beans that they fell apart before they could be handled. Mahi Mahi entrees were just not good enough to justify the price. Aside from a nice patio bar atmosphere in the up-and-coming PrairieFire development, this restaurant doesn't really set itself apart and the quality of food leaves a lot to be desired. I would not recommend it.

My husband, baby, and I stopped here on our way out of town. We didn't realize, but due to Cinco de Mayo, they were giving away free chips and salsa. I loved that the menu was modern and interesting. My husband tried Bolo's Burger (8oz Fresh Ground Beef, Pork Carnitas, Tempura Fried Poblano, Pepper Jack Cheese, Avocado, Smoked Bacon and Tomatillo, Jalapeño Jam served with French Fries) and I opted for Bolo's Burrito (Large Flour Tortilla Loaded with 8-Hour Pork Carnitas, Cilantro-Lime Rice, Black Beans, Monterey Jack Cheese, Smothered in Chile Verde and Cocobolos Queso, served with Tortilla Chips). We were very pleased with both! Our waitress was also very friendly and accommodating, finding us a booth with a little more privacy so I could nurse my son. Happy customers!

This is the second time in 7 days I have gone to this magnificent restaurant. Not only is Dani the Worlds Best Waitress but David is the best chef! His hot chocolate is like drinking chocolate heaven! Stop by for genuinely wonderful food, fantastic customer service and hot chocolate. My next goal, after getting them to put the hot chocolate on the menu (I would love to name it!) is to bring back the taro chips.

During our second visit at the new CocoBolos, we had an amazing experience. New Head Chef, Dan Sobek, has taken the menu to new lengths, keeping an authentic Mexican foundation but with more of a modern and tasty flare. The head bartender came to our table and made us custom cocktails tailored to our specific preferences, which were all unique and flavorful. The new and improved menu, customer service and great location make CocoBolos one of the best places to visit in the KC metro. We will be back soon to try their highly recommended brunch menu.

I took my family there tonight. Sat at the bar outside with a ten piece talented band playing in the background. Beautiful evening! Service was gracious and fast by the short but lovely bartender. I only mention she is short because the bar is so high and it made her job difficult but she was very humorous about it and did a terrific job! Red ordered the fish street tacos, 2/5 stars. Daughter and I each ordered the steak street tacos, 0/5 stars. It was food. That's about all I can say about the meal. The venue and service is 5 stars but what we ordered was bland if not bordering on tasteless. The portions of steak bits was underwhelming and devoid of taste. The tortillas were tasty but that's it. I was watching a man that appeared to be at least an assistant manager if not the GM. I was hopeful he would come by and ask how everything was but did not nor did I view this interaction anywhere else on the patio. Some critical changes really need to take place quickly. I really would love to see this business make it. I do not go to chains except Bonefish Grill (consistent) because I prefer individually owned restaurants. Summit Grill in Lees Summit is renowned for its street tacos but doesn't have the location that Cocobolos has or the ambiance. Perhaps we ordered the only dishes on the menu that were forgettable. I had much higher expectations and in this economy new venues may only get one opportunity to secure repeat raving fans. This clearly was not the case.

Attention K-State alums: this is NOT the same Coco Bolos as you're used to in Manhattan. At first glance, it seems to share a few similar menu items including my all-time favorite, the Tijuana Trainwreck. Description was even very similar except this came with cilantro rice and black beans instead of the mexican potatoes I love at the other one. We started with an appetizer of the street corn. It was actually really good served with some chips. You didn't get very much for $7 but nonetheless, I enjoyed it. 4 stars for the street corn. Of course, I ordered the Tijuana Trainwreck and was disappointed to say the least. This version had very little sauce (like the corn tortillas had just been dipped in the verde sauce) but did have a decent amount of chicken. I felt like it was just chicken, tortillas and a tiny bit of sauce. The Manhattan one was SWIMMING in sauce and cheese (delicious!) but this one lacked both... very dry. The cilantro rice did not have enough cilantro for my taste (I didn't detect any unless it was sprinkled on top.) The black beans were delicious though, I think they had some chunks of meat in it. Lastly.. the service.. I've definitely had worse, but the thing that gets me - she didn't refill my water! We sat there for a long time and it was never refilled. She DID stop by a few times and ask us how everything was, but I assumed I didn't have to REQUEST to have my water refilled so I never said anything, I assumed that was a given. Wrong. I should have asked. If you can't keep my water (my one drink) refilled- come on. Overall, I'm not impressed. My expectations were probably too high, but like someone else said, for the price, it was sub-par. I will save my Coco Bolos visits for when I go back to Manhattan.

Short and sweet: After too long of a wait at another restaurant, a few friends and I decided to eat here. It seemed like every other restaurant in Prairiefire was busy, but when we arrived here at 7pm on a Thursday, there were only 2 other parties eating. The menu was pretty simple, but nothing on it looked super appetizing. A strange mix of random kind of Mexican dishes. I decided on the Bolos Burger and was not impressed. Even though it was topped with bacon, pork carnitas, and cheese, it didn't have a flavor at all and mostly tasted burnt. We also ordered the chips and salsa trio. Our waitress asked us if we would like to try some of the hotter salsas in addition to their standard trio. I like a little heat, so I said yes. The salsa she brought us tasted like tomato bisque and had no heat at all. I would not return to eat here or recommend it to others. I would be surprised if it was even open 6 months from now.

I'm surprised by the poor reviews, as we had both good service and food here. PrairieFire is not really my scene, but I was pleasantly surprised by our experience here. The atmosphere was pretty nice. Casual, rustic, industrial-ish. Lots of raw wood elements, and some cool works by Scribe, KC's best known graffiti artist. Only complaints about the space are that it is quite loud (likely due to high ceilings and raw elements), and I wish the patio were a bit bigger. The Cocobolos chips & salsa were a slightly more interesting chip blend with three fine/okay salsas. The chips included plantain, root, shrimp, and corn varieties. These were slightly interesting, but not anything I would order again. I had the Ancho Chile glazed pork roast as my main. The meat was delicious. It had a great crust to it, yet was very tender in the center and smothered in Ancho sauce. The plantains were a little disappointing. They did not live up to my plantain experiences in South America, which is somewhat to be expected, but the dish also had very few plantains and way too many pineapples. As for drinks, we shared a pitcher of sangria which was $28 or so and easily shared. It was good to me, but I'm no sangria expert. Overall, it's a good place. I'm glad they have varied price points on their menu...makes it a little more accessible to the masses than some of the places in PrairieFire. They have a kid menu too, so I guess that improves their accessibility even more.

My girlfriend invited me out to this place last night, Tuesday night. At 7 pm was able to get a rockstar parking spot in the garage around the corner. Parking is VERY important to me. I can get an anxiety attack if it's not just right. Go ahead and make fun of me, I doubt I'm the only one! We sat outside at the bar. Another balmy night in Overland Park always helps make for a great evening. I ordered a ginger mojito and the grilled chicken skewers served on rice with tomatoes and corn. Both, excellent and reasonably priced ($7 and $16 respectively). My friend had the taco trio and she really liked them, and she is very picky, so if SHE likes them, they are incredible. The bar tender was able to multitask and we never felt neglected even though he was tremendously busy, but the fact we were two super good-looking ladies may have helped? . :)

In my opinion, crappy food at a high price. Ordered the enchiladas and it came on pita bread. The portions are small, and it didn't taste good. There's nothing wowing about what you order. There are no descriptions on the menu and the waiters don't describe it well. If you want Mexican go to Taco Bell over this place. I'd come here for drinks and appetizers but not lunch or dinner.

Mahi mahi was terrible. Chile Verde was amazing. Tacos, hanger steak, pork roast, and burritos were all somewhere in between. Parking took almost 30 mins on a Saturday night, so plan accordingly. If you order apps, skip the salsa and go straight for the guacamole. Margaritas were just decent enough that I'll consider coming back for margs and chile verde. Otherwise it's not worth the time or money to venture off of Southwest Boulevard for Mexican food.

I stopped in here on a Sunday evening with my brother, sister and law and friend. We ordered the $3 chips and salsa as an appetizer. The chips were very good, but there wasn't nearly enough salsa for as many chips that we got. I ordered the caipirinha cocktail, it was very refreshing. The entrees we ordered were the pork roast, skillet nachos, quesadillas and baja chicken and shrimp wrap. The pork roast had a lot of fat on it. I agree with the other reviews in that it's a little pricey for what you get. The inside of my chicken and shrimp wrap was very good, the spinach tortilla it was wrapped in though was a little old and stale tasting. I also read in other reviews and agree that it would be nice for them to put descriptions on the menu. We found ourselves googling a lot of the items. The service was good, our server was very friendly and seemed to know the menu pretty well. I probably won't be back, there are better places around.

It pains me to give this place 3 stars. I have eaten at the Coco Bolos in Manhattan, KS and it is by far my favorite restaurant (it was 4 stars on yelp), along with several of my friends. I knew that this would be a little different but it was a little irritating. Let me explain... -We were seated pretty quickly which was great and we ordered chips and salsa, which were good, nothing fancy. -Lets take a look at the menu. None of the food items are explained! This is SO frustrating. I don't want to pull out my iPhone and look up what an item is for almost all of the menu. This menu is different than the one in Manhattan but had a small section that said "CoCo's Originals". One of the items on there is Tijuana Trainwreck. Now I knew what this was because I have had it before, in Manhattan, but never here. It wasn't explained at all what it was. What first timer to a restaurant would order this with no explanation of what it is!? Let me say it was not the same thing. It had a green sauce, and about half the food that the place in Manhattan has. You are also not served a side with this, like the one in Manhattan (which you get a salad or taters). It irritated me that the waitress knew I had eaten at the one in Manhattan but didn't bother to tell me that this particular item was not the same, but she did tell me AFTER I mentioned something. If this is listed under "Originals" then keep it the same. This article says that it would feature the same items but clearly that wasn't true kansascity.com/2013/11/1… -My boyfriend had the tacos. He ordered 2 fish tacos and the beef tongue. He said the beef taco was delicious but the fish tacos where so heavily breaded that you couldn't taste the fish. You are also not given a side... just three tacos. Overall this place was disappointing and we probably won't return. It isn't worth the drive to 135th and Nall. That being said I would definitely drive 2 hours for the one in Manhattan...

We had high hopes for this new place considering the Chefs that are backing it. We must've gone on a bad day. New places can have growing pains I suppose: Issues: When we walked in - there was no greeter. Waited a few minutes just to be noticed. Our server seemed too busy for us, when we were finally seated, there was no acknowledgement of the wait nor any greeting or introduction -- While we were waiting, we watched a different party get seated, wait and then get up and leave. We thought about it as well. Our server took our order and left- Our appetizer arrived fairly quickly and was simply dropped off at our table as our server walked by... didn't even stop walking! And without any words... Like she was delivering a spy briefcase! And... did the exact same move with our drinks a few minutes later! - Food: Guacamole was great! Chips were different (thicker, harder and more crunchy than the usual tortilla chips) First entree (chicken wrap) was good. The other entree (Pick 3 tacos) was 33% good. (The beef tongue taco was great! - the other 2, Pork and Steak were both missing key ingredients (potato missing from steak taco and Pineapple missing from pork taco) which made them too salty. :-( Externally, the restaurant needs to put a sign on the front RIGHT non-opening door that has an arrow pointing out that the entrance is on the other side - also I overheard some people out front wondering what restaurant it was (I told them) - so perhaps some signage changes are in order. We're gonna chalk this up to being new and having growing pains. I hope the restaurant fixes the greeting and the server training and that the front of the house gets its act together, while the back of the house gets the menu memorized. May try again in a few months.

Very disappointed! Seven of us ate there this evening. I will say we had very good service from a very personable and "on it" waitress. BUT - the food was terrible. Starting off with the chips and salsa. They charge for chips and salsa and bring out three salsas. We all are not picky eaters and we all love everything Mexican. None of these salsas were good at all. Black bean salsa was bland, the tomatillo salsa was so bitter and sour you might as well have been biting on a lemon and the red salsa was also bland and tasteless. We all had a variety of things from the burrito, to the pork chili. to the street tacos. Also the Mexican Corn Dip and the Mexican veggies. The burrito was the only thing that was sort of ok. Why in the world would the burrito come with a "side of chips", yet they have no salsa to bring you except the ones they serve on the triple salsa appetizer, which are NOT like any type of regular salsa. And the burritos are like $12 each and Chipotle makes a better burrito than this place. The street tacos were dry with no sauce to put on them. And the margaritas are $9 for the "cheap" version and they were decent, but nothing to write home about. All in all, it is NOTHING like the Manhattan Cocobolos - not even the same menu-- and unless that menu changes, we won't be back.

After a fun day with my niece, we stopped here for lunch. We sat outside on their patio, and I was surprised that I did not feel like we were right in the middle of traffic. The cars do pass by not far from the tables, but it still manages to feel private....While sitting on the patio, we couldn't help but notice how many people had a hard time finding their front door. It is a large, heavy looking door with frosted windows and their signage next to the door kind of blends in with the wall - I'm sure nobody misses it on their return visits, but all of the confusion we saw that day proved to be entertaining during our lunch. We started with the queso with chips and thought they were both good. I would certainly feel comfortable ordering again, even though $8.00 is a little more than I would like to pay for cheese and chips. My niece had the 3 taco lunch and chose the steak, fish and beef tongue tacos. They looked very fresh and well made. She decided the steak taco was her favorite. I tried the chicken shrimp baha wrap. I would probably not order again, only because I felt the overwhelming amount of rice in the wrap was unnecessary. The flavors used in the wrap were really good, it just had too much rice as a filler. I thought the portions were a good size and the price seemed average for the area.

I went here last night with my Fiancé. We were so excited about the location and the lovely patio. The waitress bought a large container of chips with a tiny cup of salsa that was not very flavorful. We ordered the guacamole which turned out to be very good. Then we tried to order beer. The waitress returned and said they were out of the beer that we ordered so we ordered a second one. She came back and said there was a problem with the distributor and they were out of that one. So in an almost unbelievable twist, they were out of the 3rd beer we ordered as well. They have a very small selection of beer, so being out of 3 seriously decreases the selection. We settled on something finally that they had. Then we ordered the Seafood Mac and Cheese and the Tiajuana Trainwreck. The pasta was overlooked and gooey. It had almost no flavor. No seasoning. No taste. The Trainwreck was just that. A train wreck that was bland and flavorless. We were so disappointed! We only ate a few bites each before the waitress came along and asked if we were finished. I told her she could just take it. She brought our check and we went across the street to eat dinner. Such an amazing location and patio. So sad the food and bar are so mediocre.

The first 2 times I went in with friends and it was great. I love their tilapia tacos. The third time I went and brought the family and it was just ok. Last week they changed the menu all together and no tilapia tacos, they said I could have mahi mahi tacos, unfortunately I do not like mahi mahi. The salad I had was just ok, the shrimp appetizer with 4 small shrimp was 12$...hmmm. Not sure I am going back. Service has always been just ok. My first 2 experiences were great then downhill after that.

'My first dining experience here was so disappointing that it compelled me to write my fist YELP review! I expected a Michael Smith restaurant to be stellar. Unfortunately, it was not. My Tijuana Trainwreck was certainly all that-- expensive, small portion, and not at all tasty. Will never return!

The other reviews weren't exaggerating when they said the service was bad. We called ahead and there was no wait, 5 minutes later we walk in to a 20 minute wait. 35 minutes later we are seated. During the wait the manager continuously made eye contact with our party but never bothered to make us feel more comfortable or offer us a seat at the bar. He did however, seem to make the 60 year old belligerently drunk man very comfortable. The waitress was good. The food was fantastic. The tostada, guacamole and chicken and shrimp burrito were perfect. The sangria was also delicious.

Tonight was my first visit to CocoBolos and I loved it. This is not what I consider typical Mexican food but that's not a bad thing. For an appetizer, we started with the mussels. They were fantastic. For the main course, I had the pork verde but substituted grilled veggies for the rice. The pork verde was the best I've had and not too spicy. The grilled veggies were also very good. Service was very attentive. Great casual atmosphere.

I went into this planning on slower service as this is a busy, newly opened restaurant, so it's to be expected. What I was not expecting was to have my order lost due to a 'printer malfunction.' The manager did the customary refund of first round of drinks, which I appreciated. Though we were not told of this until both he and our waitress had come and apologized once each...in my experience it's good to lead with that kind of info, douse the fire immediately so to speak. All that being said, the food and atmosphere here are pretty good. My only gripe would be that if you want tacos or enchiladas, you need to order your rice and beans separately for $4 a pop, not super expensive but were talking rice and beans here not an awesome unique side. They do have some more unique Mexican inspired dishes which sets it apart from your run of the mill Mexican place, so if you're feeling adventurous and have a craving for Mexican, give it a try. I'll go back, it's just gonna be a while so they've got time to work out the kinks in service.

I honestly don't know what all the bad reviews are about, unless they had a sloppy opening and have it together now. Went tonight with some girls for happy hour. $5 sangria and margaritas until 6. The sangria tasted more like Moscato but wasn't bad, just different. You could tell the margaritas were made fresh. Had the salsa trio and it was amazing, and I also really liked my pork tequtos. Would recommend and definitely come back.

First and last time eating here. Ordered the street tacos which sounded good on the menu. Got them and the meat was dry and not really hot. Would not recommend eating here. Many better options in the area. Gave 2 stars because the service was good.

Wow, Michael Smith must really be at a low point in his career. One of the worst restaurant experiences I've had in years - and I eat out 4 nights a week on average. Went last night around 6:30PM, no one at the greeting podium - had to track down a wait person to ask if we should seat ourselves or wait. (this was after 5 employees walked past us but didn't say a word). Finally got seated and then the fun started. After taking our drink orders the wait person spilled a glass of water all over the table and our personal things. She came back with paper napkins and left it to us to clean up her mess - we should have left then. She came back with our drink orders and spilled a margarita too! The food was mediocre, the service was awful and the atmosphere was lame. Enter at your own Risk!

Terrible bartending and very mediocre food! We sat at the bar on a recent Saturday night. The female bartender was openly hostile, talking badly about the patrons to the other bartender, who was making some effort to be agreeable while placating her. No one greeted us, asked us for our order, etc. We would have left, but the other restaurants in the area were packed. Based on her whispers, she had a problem with Johnson County people, even though the business is in Johnson County. When our food finally did come, it was slight and bland. The rolled tacos were small and perfectly rolled as if they were from a factory. The décor was OK, but operationally, Cocobolos is an unprofessional operation....maybe given time???? As a former employer, I know it's extremely hard to find and maintain good help.

Banana split is to die for !! Icecreams topped with banana bread and flowing with sweet nectar... Caramelized bananas and strawberries completed the affair. Sharimg among two felt big. I had vegetarian mushroom enchiladas... Which were fine !

My husband and I went for lunch during the week. First of all, we had fantastic service! It made the meal! We shared a pitcher of red sangria. It was good, but a little too sweet for our liking. We each got the three taco meal. The different tacos were all fantastic; they definitely had the Michael Smith delicious spin in each one. The food, the service, the atmosphere/decor, and the prices were outstanding and we cannot wait to go back! Another win for Michael Smith!

I tried CocoBolos for the first time last week and have to say I'm in no rush to go back. I had reservations and was the first to arrive from my party of three by about five minutes. The atmosphere was bright and enticing, but I wasn't greeted or offered water, and even after my first friend arrived we had to flag down the waiter to order a drink. My menu had some old food crusted on it and the table also had to be re-wiped after we had already been seated. Not the best start to the evening. When we were all there and ready to order, our waiter was friendly and knowledgeable, and the chips and salsa trio came out promptly. The salsas were each tasty and different and were a nice size to share, although there is a charge for them. Two of us ordered salads for our entrees and one ordered the street tacos, which she loved, specifically the carnitas! The great thing about the salads was that the smaller and cheaper size was plenty for an entree. There were, though, some downsides. For one, we each ordered different salads yet they were almost identical. Mine, the Al fresco, lacked flavor and could have definitely benefitted from either some acidity or spice. My friend ordered the tostada salad which came out in a bowl instead of the tostada shell promised on the menu. The stars of the meal were actually the sides of roasted plantains and pineapple and Mexican street corn that we shared. Then again I'm always a sucker for some street corn! Overall the whole experience was just kind of blah....except my friends of course, they deserve a five star rating!

I went her for lunch today with my wife and youngest daughter. There was a special going on with 435 Magazine so we figured we would give this place a shot as we had been to most all the other Prairie Fire restaurants. The poor Yelp! reviews and the fact that it was nearly empty should have been enough of a sign but we went ahead and decided to give it a shot. My wife and I both got the shrimp tostada and my 3 year old got chicken tacos. First off, the children's plate of 3 chicken tacos had more food than my plate of 2 small tostadas. There was so much raw cabbage piled on it I can't honestly say that there was more than 1 micro shrimp per tostado. My tostadas were served with an icecream scoop white rice. Very cafateriaesque. My entire plate was bland and flavorless. Wife felt the exact same. Had we been charged the regular price ( I can't remember exactly but it was $12-$15) I would have complained on the spot. Since I only payed $4.35 due to the special I just let it go. Still felt that I was overcharged but it was hard enough to get the attention of our waitress that would have just added more time and we were ready to leave. My daughters tacos we decent. Nothing special but better than average. Another big complaint is they charge for chips and salsa. Since that's not the norm you better have pretty damn good chips and salsa. Chips were pretty good but again, the salsa was bland and lacked flavor. My meal reminded me of something our club would serve. Most members are well into their 70s and 80s so the food has very little flavor and no salt. Bland. Boring. Overpriced.

The new Prairie Fire area is a great new addition to the south KC area. I have been to CocoBolos in Manhattan, KS when visiting friends and from what I can remember, it was a good experience. So it was exciting to hear that they opened one in KC and on top of that it was a Michael Smith restaurant. I think when a chef adds his name to something, there are extra high expectations for the food. First of all the ambiance and patio and decor is very fun and festive. The server was not too thrilled to be working. She brought our drinks but never asked if we wanted to start with appetizers until we waved her over and asked if we could order. She kept disappearing inside for lengths of time, even though the inside was empty and all her tables were on the patio. Had to wave her over again to order entrees. The menu has potential, sounds exciting with latin flavors, but falls flat on execution with bland over-priced food. The guacamole was good and was happy to see they had plantain chips (the best thing we had). The chicharrones were average, covered in chili powder without much flavor. I got the guava bacon shrimp appetizer $12, wasn't too hungry because I ate all the plantain chips, but was disappointed when it turned out to be 4 small (small like you buy 35-40 in a bag small) shrimp wrapped in bacon and covered in BBQ sauce and four small diced cubes of what must have been guava. My husband and friend got the tacos, terrible. The chicken was dry, like it had been cooked 3 days ago and left sitting out in the warmer. The steak was bland and dry, and the fish was the "best" one but still lacked any flavor. They both had to ask for salsa to give it some flavor and cover up the dryness factor, but that didn't help. Maybe the Chef needs to get some quality control going over there on the food. It has potential to be good like Extra Virgin, but I don't think I'll be going back. Overall, a good place if you want to sit on the patio on a nice evening for drinks and chips and guac.

One star because I coukd not choose zero. OVERPRICED TINY TINY portions. $6 for chips and salsa and only about 50 total chips. Ugh.

Good wine. Small portions for the price. Husband ordered mushroom entree with Mole sauce it tasted like chocolate sauce on mushroom burrito. Not good. Good atmosphere though. Sorry the food wasn't better.

This place just doesn't really have much going for it. Small portions, little flavor, high price, slow and smug service.

Terribly overpriced vs flavor, quality and service. Great environment but that is the best part. Paying $7 for chips and salsa? I would absolutely pay for hot salsa and chips at a restaurant but this was not special and not flavorful. Server was fine but only one person ate their meal so it was fairly obvious she did not care a lot.. Two beers, one weak beverage, water, 1 kids meal and three adults and it was 100$. Wow.

This place, despite the reviews, was one I had high hopes for. After all, I had seen that Michael Smith had made the menu and such. The patio was beautiful and my friend and I were seated right away. However, it took forever for us to order. And when I finally tracked down the server, I asked her about the gluten free options and she had a very hard time answering. Then I ordered some tacos and asked her to double check for me before placing the order. She comes back some five minutes later and then tells me the tortillas aren't corn so I say I'll have to order something else, and it takes me another five minutes just to bring a menu back. Finally, I figured out something that worked and when we finally got our food it was yummy. I had the shrimp tostadas and my companion had the pork roast. We shared the chili bacon caramel corn and some of the plantains. The good: the plantains, shrimp, and pork roast. The bad: the service. The you-could-if-you-wanted-but-not-necessary: the caramel corn. It was fun and certainly had a chili kick at the end but I feel like I might be able to make a better version at home.

Great atmosphere, good food. I'm from California and picky about most Mexican food around here. The food is all fresh (not the canned crud), the guac is excellent, and we all liked our food.

I went to CocoBolos for lunch and the food and drinks were delicious. The new menu has lots of great options. The guacamole and salsa trio were tasty and unique. The street corn and ancho chips are also definitely worth trying. We told the bartender what types of drinks we liked and he made us specialty cocktails that were amazing. Atmosphere is very inviting and service was great. Planning to go again to try the dinner menu as well as the Sunday brunch with bottomless mimosas. The new menu is great! I would highly recommend CocoBolos.

Went for lunch with a friend and sat outside on patio which was lovely. We were seated in the shade do the heat was not bad. The decor is colorful and fun. Our server was good and made nice recommendations. I had the shark tacos. Very disappointing. Probably will not go back as there are do many amazing places to fine in Kansas City.

Odd from top to bottom. The door needs better signage, the back room decor is a bizarre mural ala McDonalds playroom, uncomfortable furniture, mediocre food, no introduction from wait staff or checking on the food, and an extra charge for more than the initial 1/3 cup of salsa?!? Great location, but won't be back.

Michael Smith has put a great and unique Latin infused menu together that is fantastic. The space matches his vibrant personality and tasteful flavors. The bar area is open and energetic. The whole experience is like being on vacation in south beach

YUM YUM YUM!! I love this new Michael Smith concept! The sangria is amazing! The chipolte meatballs (they have a fancy name) are tasty! The chips are home made. You do have to purchase additional salsas, which I don't love, but it's so good!

We enjoyed a great dinner last week during restaurant week. I would recommend the roasted brussell sprouts, ancho potato chips, and crab cakes all were delicious and I will order again. My husband and I spilt the seafood ma-n-cheese and it was a very generous portion as had a spicy kick that we liked! Great service too! Fun place.

I had dinner with a friend here last weekend, and it was fantastic! We started with some sangria, and the chips & salsa trio. Everything is made in house, from scratch, and you can definitely tell the difference that makes! Our server was fantastic, and informed us that the menu has just within the past few weeks gone through a major transformation. (New management?) Manny (our server) was so helpful in explaining some of the new menu items, and giving us recommendations. We decided to split the Pork Chop Al Pastor, and order sides of Roasted Brussels Sprouts, and Mexican Street Corn. All new menu items - It was ALL sooooo yummy! The pork chops were cooked perfectly, so tender and delicious. It came on a bed of pilaf rice & black beans, and topped with a mango salsa. The flavors all worked so well together. The Brussel Sprouts had some chorizo in there (I love chorizo), and the Mexican Street Corn was grilled but still crunchy, had some pepper in there (but not too spicy). It was sweet & savory, and such a nice compliment the entree. After all this we were pretty full, but decided we couldn't leave without trying the Bananas Foster for dessert. Divine. Totally worth it ;)

Chicken and cheese tamale was all corn meal. Rice is like a sticky rice failure and inedible. No ambience, very noisy. First and only time here.

A restaurant that charges for chips and salsa when you are ordering food and liquor in KC...I am not a fan! Ordered Shrimp Tostadas ...expected a hot dish...it was a cold dish and the very small shrimp were very chewy and not flavorful. Told the waitress I expected it to be hot and she implied that happens a lot...wonder why they don't say that on the menu or when you order it! Manager did comp that meal and was very nice about it. Margaritas were excellent! Others in my party got a chicken/shrimp wrap and the smoky flavor was overwhelming... no one loved it! The good news is the atmosphere is great and they have potential...they just need to do simple mexican food...they are trying to hard to make it gourmet!! AND...again...charging for chips/salsa in KC...will kill you!

Five of us went for dinner and drinks. Only one out of five liked their dishes. I thought the food would be pretty good considering that Michael Smith was part of the restaurant. We also were able to share each other's plates and nothing that we ordered was above average. The salsa trio was ok. The mild salsa they have is kind of runny and honestly taste likes a ketchup base. Did not care for it. The shrimp tostados were so bad that we didn't even eat them. They had the ketchup based salsa piled with 4 tiny pieces of plain shrimp, some crumbly cheese that added no flavor to the dish and was covered with piles of shredded lettuce and green onion. It honestly was gross. The Guava BBQ shrimp was good, but they only give you four pieces so it leaves you wanting more food. The pork taquitos were disgusting. It tasted like a greasy tortilla with some sort of mystery meat inside. As for the custom drinks the sangria was basically a red wine spritzer (no cut up fruit?!), the Strawberry Fresca tasted like chili powder and soda and the margaritas were average. Four out of five of us will not go back. I just don't see how this place will make it, but then again I have determined a lot of people do not know what good food tastes like.

I love the atmosphere, the architecture. The star was very friendly the manager took time to chat. The place was clean. Unfortunately if your were expecting the amazing food and drinks of the real Coco Bolos in Manhattan, KS, drive away fast. There really is zero connection. Menu times with the same names are not the same by a mile. I had the worst marguarita ever--tasted like toilet bowl cleaner. The mushroom/cheese enchiladas were bland and tasteless and served cold---who puts swiss cheese in an enchilada? The chips were cardboard chips like you buy at Costco. The food looks nice but is very foo fool like some NY hip tappas bar. No one at my table was served anything they really enjoyed. The pablano chowder soup was awful. This place will not last sorry to say. Maybe you liked your food but one thing is clear, this place is night and day from Coco Bolos Manhattan. Cool artwork though :) The desert was very good...the only plus.

Horrible. Food was not good. Service was poor. Overpriced. This place will be closed in 6 months. Michael Smith really should be ashamed of being associated with this "restaurant". Don't bother even trying, you will waste your time and money and be completely disappointed. There are much better choices within 100 feet.

We stopped by for drinks and to review the menu on Friday, then brought a group of 6 for dinner on Sunday since the menu appeared interesting, had a lot of fish, and we already love Michael Smith's and Extra Virgin so we were sure it would be good. Unfortunately, we were very disappointed. Service was sketchy from the start. We intentionally separated our drink and appetizer order even though we wanted them together because of the confusion our server displayed while taking drink orders. Those took a long time to get but we persevered, ordered our appetizers, received them and spent about an hour socializing. Four of us had already decided on fish when we sat down based on our diet preferences. When the server took our order, she informed us they were out of fish, which would have been nice to know an hour earlier since there are numerous other restaurants serving fish in the Prairie Fire complex to which we could have gone. But too late now so some of us ordered shrimp meals we really didn't want and some made a meal of side items and I ordered beef which I really did not want to eat. Service continued to be lackluster. Food was disappointing - bland, sloppy presentation, small servings. We spoke to the manager upon leaving and received excuses - they misjudged food quantities, evening was understaffed, growing pains. No offer of a free drink or appetizer on a future visit to soften our disappointment. Just excuses we really didn't want to hear after spending $235. I even called today to speak with the day manager and same excuses. Perhaps these managers should train at Bonefish or J Alexanders or someplace known for exceptional COMMUNICATION and CUSTOMER SERVICE. Goodness knows we will not go back!

Went to lunch with my wife, took a while for the hostess to great us, which she barely did. She seats us in a 90% empty room and tried to sit us at the smallest possible table right in the blistering sun. Ask to sit somewhere else, tries to sit us next to a couple already eating (FYI I HATE communal seating) seriously the restaurant is EMPTY!! I dont want to sit in a booth next to a stranger!! We sit for about 10 minutes before a server stops by, not ours btw she takes our drinks and says our server will be with us, wait another 10 minutes. Same server finally comes back apologizes takes our order. She was nice... Finally our actual server stops by, I had seen her hanging out by the kitchen the whole time, nice. she could care less and you can tell. only saw her twice, the other very nice server basically took over. Food was meh, really not what I was expecting. Frita's is so much better. I dont think I will be going back. Oh and if anyone from Cocobolos read this, tell your hostess to not wear running shorts to work I understand casual, but that is seriously tacky.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
